BOROUGH LOAN PROPOSALS.
(To the Editor.) Sir,—l see that the same old proposition la to come before the ratepayers again to-day re loan. I wonder when they are going to stop? Thero Is nothinc lilts bleeding the poor old ratepayers every time. The moTe they get the more they want. We all know our rates aTe had enough without another burden. Why Is it there is never a balance sheet of the office expenditure? The more money the borough councillors want, the mora Is spent in the offices or on the staff. Ratepayers, don't he fooled hy a few ratepayers thai attended the meeting on Tuesday night. Remember they don't constitute the whole of the borough. The late Mr. Tlseb, Mayor of New Plymouth, a few years ago struck a rato or a special loan to complete Leach Street. Has it ever been done? No; and never will bo. Most, nf our rates go to Devon Street. There has been imore spent on that street than would make a real good road from here to Dunedln, and yet It is nothing but patching.—l am, etc, RATEPAYER. [The point our correspondent misses is tlmt unless the street loan is approved to-day, ratepayers will have to provide the money to do the necessary work out of rates. Isn't it far better to make a job of it at once out of loan money and pay Interest a.nd sinking fund spread over a number of years? The plain truth is that ratepayers have no option In the matter. Thev must support the loans In their own interest*—Ed.]
