Mr. ,T. Paton, who has been spending a holiday at Rotorua, returned to New Plymouth by the mail train last night.

A farewell social and dance was recently tendered by the residents of Whakamara to Detective and Mrs, Nuttall, of Hawera.

A very old and respected resident of the W&it Coast, in the person of Mr. Frederick Hambrock, died last week at Greymoivth, aged 78 years.

Mr. T. L. Woods will retire from the staff of the Bank of New Zealand on September 30, after 40 years' service. Mr. Woods was manager at Levnka, Fiji, for over 13 years, and since January, 1906, has been manager at Blenheim. The resignation of Sir James Allen from the Executive Council and from the offices of Minister for Defence, finance, Stamp Duties, and External Affairs, has been gazetted. Notification has also been given of his appointment as High Commissioner for New Zealand in the United Kingdom from August 1, 1920, to August 1, 1923.

Another veteran of the Maori wars, Mr. T. E. Brill, died in the Wellington Hospital on Thursday night at the age of 80 years. He was a first-class sergeant, No. -2 Division, New Zealand Armed Constabulary, and served throughout the Maori wars on both the east and west coasts oi the North Island, participating'in the engagements at Nukumaru, Otauto, Ngaire, Waikaremoana, Ruatahitna, Pared, and Tapapa. He was commonly known in the service as "Charlie Brown," and delighted in the nickname, which he gave himself. After his campaigning he was a hotelkeeper at Tapua for some years, and for a longer period at Napier. He then went to Wellington, where lie took up his permanent residence. His wife- predeceased him isix months ago, and ho leaves a family of six, and eight grand-, children. One of his sons, 10/1753 Ptc V. A. Brill, No. 2 Machine Gun Company, N.Z.8.F., won the Military MedalDeceased, who was highly respected,' and had a host of friends, was a life member of the Wellington Working Men's Club, and was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Napier. The body was interred at Karovi .Cemetery on Saturday.
