The Chancellor gave the following approximate figures, currency oeing converted at par. In Britain the average amount of direct taxes per' head was, 1914 91*,' 1920 3035; in France in November, 101$, it was 13s 6d and in Decern- , ber, 1919, 47» sd; in Italy, June. 1914, 12» Bd, June, 1919 43s 3d; in the United States, June, 1914, 3s sd; June, 1919; 100s. Under the Budget 1920-21 the British flgure-will be 2875. Mr. Chamberlain declared that he gave tile, figures reservedly and would not be responsible for any inference drawn from them.—lmperial New Service,
