Canterbury papers state that the Englishbred Motor Patrol Is a uood looker* ° The war Is still having its Influence-cm ftoraenclature, as In addition to Motor Patrol we nave newly named nrnds such as. Over There Camhrai, Rouen, Charlerol, War Illbbon and Foreign Strife,
The New Zealand turf suffered a ' great loss when Demosthenes wns recently sold to an Australian buyer. The price mentioned was 400(1 guineas, at which the Englishbred horse Is n cheap stallion. Demosthenes slreil many (rood horses din-In* the Mort time ho lias hern at the services of the New Zealand breeder*, and his stock were at home over nil distances. Amythns. Afterglow, Crenldes, Star Lady, Impediment Hetaua, Tatinahn. and others are notable' winners amongst the Demosthenes tribe, and the Imported horse will be greatly missed. One thing that must, have Impressed the Princo at Ellerslie was the up-to-dnte appointments provided English visitors are apt to sneer at.racing In this small Dominion. but patrons of racing here would not put up with the inconveniences noticeable nn the big courses at Home. Even at Newmarket (Eng.), the cheaper enclosures are devoid of notice hoards, and people forced to patronise them are quite in the dafk as to eera tellings, riders, overweights, etc. The writer received a rude Bhock when saw the correct card produced at Epsom on Perhy Day. It wns a flimsy, wretchert affair and warranted the remark that "they could beat tlijs at Pihnma 1" Sir Reorge Clifford generally selects very appropriate names for his horses,' and the latest batch sent down from Stonyhurat include three yearlings, named respectively Purple Star (Antagonist.—Heatherbrae), Ange'.o (Kilbroney—Angelina) and Glnnt Killer (Autumnus—Brave Heart). r.lwimlng Is not being hustled at present, but. R. Mason Is keeping Ivaro and Adopted going strongly Karo should bo heard of now that, tht sting is rait, of the oronnd. much needed rain luring fallen at P.lccr.rton The fencts recently greeted on tin ttespla-
chasecolirse at Hawera proved too formidable for a large number of aspirants to cross country honors, so the club very wisely decided to lower some of the stlffest obstacles. Even so the course will he harder than the one previously provided, but the fences are nicely greeted, and will give all decent jumpers a fair' show to get round.
"Poor prices were realised at the bloodstocfc sales held at Hastings last week. The bay mare, Te Puia Was purchased by Mr. S. Liddle, of Hawera, for 30 guineas, and the black mare Wairiporipo, by Mr. .1. Smith, also of Hawera, for 30 guineas. The two-year-old Harangue, by Demosthenes—To Puia, went to Mr. .T. Smith, at 14 guineas. Yearlings by Mountalu Knight ranged from 30 guineas to 100 guineas, the latter price being received for a nice Ally out of Mangaroa. It is expected that the acceptances received this evening for the Eltham Racing Club's Inaugural meeting will be worthy of such a gathering. The newly-formed club deserves every encouragement In taking on a noutotallsator meeting, and when a totallsator permit Is secured the stakes will be Increased considerably. All owners should give the Eltham Club a good "push off." The presence of Amythas and Arrowsmlth in the Marlborough Stakes, run over a mile at w.f.a. will occasion a lot of Interest, but It is to be regretted that Gloaming is an absentee. Amythas, through being trained over a distance, suffered one defeat at Awapunl, where Avrowsmith gave him such a great race! earlier in the programme, but with a few sharpening up gallops Amythas will carry our coin at Rlecarton.
A northern writer has computed that Silver Link has started on thirty occasions for eleven wins. She cost Mr. A. Alexander 80 guineas and has won in stakes £4040. Master Moutoa had th? confidence of his party In the Hurdles at Canterbury Parle (N.fliW.), on April 2fith., but the New 55ea,lander had to be content with third place, less than threo lengths frnm the winner. Master Moutoa promises tc mako amends for that defeat very shortly. A remarkable double dead-heat Is recorded nt Werrlbee (Australia) the other day. In the chief event, the Werrlbee Handicap, run over a mile and a quarter. Royal Token and Mnemonic ran a dc-ad-heat, and after a stirring set-to the run off resulted similarly.
The Beragoon—Volrrn colt purchased at Hie Sydney yearling sales liv Mr. ,1. Stewart was bought for Mr. G. D. Greenwood. Tim colt was brought orer last week, and at 230 guineas he should not. he a dear horso Trotting is being token up In South Australia, and promises to be as popular as elsewhere. Recently an Association was formed in Adelaide, and so successful was mo rpenln/r non-totalisator meeting that stakes wore doubled at the second.
"Aussie" soldiers are foml of spinning 'stretchers," and the yarns that have been told about tin/ Prince's participation in the game of two-np, played by soldiers in France,' require more than the usual grain of salt The latest Is that when the Prince took the kip one "Aussie" bawled, "I'll bet ten francs he don t turn his old man's head up I" To bo given a chance to distinguish himself at the Sydney unregistered meetings, the gelding Retlnite claims the distinction nl having won no less than 47 races at upcountry Queensland meetings.
