THE DIVORCE LAW.
CHURCH VIEWS V. THE STATE. By Tel«r»ph.—Press Asm—Copyright. London, May 5fhe House of Lords debated Lord Buckmaater's Divorce Bill The Primate moved a nefr clause forbidding the elergy to remarry any divorced person in any Anglican church while a former husband or wife are living. Lord Buckmaster proposed a compromise restricting the prohibition to the defendants in a divorce suit. Lords Selborne and Birkenhead supporting Lord Buokmaster, declared that the Primate's clause would raise the whole question of the established church. Lord Birkenhead added that if the church attempted to discipline clergy who disagreed with their leaders on this subject many opponents to disestablishment might be compelled to reconsider their attitude. The Archbishop of York said that, though it might mean lifting the curtain on a great drama, namely the Church versus the State, Lord BuckBlaster's compromise could not be accepted. I The PrimateV clause was rejected by £1 votes to 50.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
