SOUTHERN PRODUCE MARKETS. Christchurcli, May 4. The grain and produce market is exceptionally quiet for this time of year. As a rule extensive North Island business is general In April and May, and the small amount of it at present may be taken to Indicate that northern buyers are disinclined to buy at present rates, except in very small quantities, to fill immediate deliveries. As the bulk of. deliveries will require to be made this month or early in June, au increase in activity may soon be looked for. In the meantime A Grade Gartons are Arm at up to 5s at country stations. Potatoes have eased, and the tone of the market generally is that when the main digging is completed, it being much later thLs year, it is expected that values will come down. Sales have taken place at country stations at £4 5s and £4 7s 6d per ton, The clover • market is disposed to be weak, but there is practically none offering. Chaff is firm at recent quotations..
