WAITARA.
The little vessel, the s.s. Kapui, which has been purchased by Messrs. Letts and Clements, arrived on Thursday evening from the Breakwater. She is to bo used for trawling and line fishing, and Is fitted with a freezing and insulated plant, enabling the owners to 30 further afield than at present and be away two or three days together- She has a tonnage of about ten tons, and her engines arc of 50 horse power, in conversation with Captain G. Laing, who is in charge, he says that very heavy weather was experienced on the fun down from Whangarei, so much so that the vessel had to heave to when off Awakino. When the weather aDated she found herself about. 30 miles from New Plymouth, for which port she made. The members of Knox Church gave a welcome social to Mr. and Mrs. Gould, tho new minister of the church, on Thursday evening. Thero was a good attendance, and an enjoyable evening was spent. Mr. Blair (chairman) expressed the hope that Mr- Gould's stay would be pleasant and enjoyable, and that every encouragement would be given to them by the members of the Church. The Rev. Mr. Gavin, on behalf of the Anglican Church, and Rev. MrLawrence offered welcome addresses. Pianoforte solos were rendered by Misses Hingley, and Miss Niekson, a vocal duet by Mr. and Mrs. Weir, and solos fly Misses Parry and Bullot, Bev. Lawrence and Mr. Weir. Supper was handed round. The business people, after advertising certain closing hours on account of the Prince's visit, were in a dilemma on Friday. Some shops closed for the usual Thursday half day and other kept open. The same occurred to-day.
