Captain F. Hudson, N.Z.S.C., will assume command of No. 8 (Taranaki) Group on the 2nd inst., vice Lieutenant J. T. Dallinger, M.C., N.Z.P.S., appointed area officer with Headquarters at Hawera.
Mr. W- Devereux, who has been borough foreman in Patea for the past three yeans, lias accepted a similar position with the Ingle wood Borough Council (says the Patea Press). Mr. Andrew Paterson, of Inglewood, was recently enrolled as a barrister of the Supreme Court by the Chief Justice, on the motion of Mr- Bennett, of Messrs. Roy and Nicholson, New Plymouth.
At tlie Central School yesterday afternoon, Mr. T. H. Sissons was farewelled by the fifth standard boys, who presented him with a. very useful token of esteem, accompanying it with a nicely-worded letter of appreciation. The headmaster expressed keen regret at losing Mr. Sissons, for not only had he given valuable help to the boys in their outdoor sports, but he had shown himself a conscientious and capable teacher. Mr. Sissons thanked the boys in appropriate terms. It is the intention of Mr. Sissons to take up farming at Marua, North Auckland.
Sir James Allen has sent the following telegram to the secretary of the Board of Governors of the Plymouth High Schools in response to a resolution passed at the last board meeting: "I appreciate the kind resolution passed by your board regarding myself, and thank them for their good wishes in my new office of High Commissioner, and wish your High School continued success and prosperity, and am sorry time will not permit of my visiting New Plymouth to give a final handshake to members of tlie board and other friends there before I leave. Au revoir." The death occurred at Gisbome on Tuesday, of Mr. John Townlcv, aged S3, who was one of the most highly respected residents of the East Coast, and was widely known as "the Grand Old Man of Gisborne." Prior to settling in Uisborne in ISS.'i, he was in business in .Yapier. Deceased was Mayor of (lisborne, and chairman of the local 11 arbor Board for very lengthy periods, but in recent years lie had not taken an active part in local polities. Ho leaves a widow and a grown-up family.
