FARM AND DAIRY. DAIRY PRODUCE. . DISPOSAL IN THE FUTURE. The butter-makers of the Dominion are, no doubt, now earnestly considering the important question of the disposal of next season's produce, when the existing arrangement of Imperial purchase comes to an end on 31st July next. Additional interest is lent to the subject by the cabled desire of the British Government to ascertain butter-makers' views on this matter. So far as.can be ascertained, they are firm for an absolutely free market. On the other hand, it is clear that the British Government wishes to "obtain butter for general consumption in Great Britain. New Zealand producers naturally feel at a disadvantage when, as happened on Ist February, Bri-tish-made butter, which bad been 275s per cwt, suddenly jumped to 500s per cwt. on oth February. It is true it receded to 400s on 20th February; f but, even so, and allowing for liberal Storage, freight, and other charges, the 1S!» paid for New Zealand offers a striking contrast- As a matter of fact, Welsh miners, flush with large wages, were paying 5s Od per pound for choice Shropshire and Dorset butters, far more than such goods were realising in London. The 'Government-controlled butter, ineluding Australian and New Zealand, i was' selling at 270s 8d per cwt, wholeI sale, and 2s 8d per pound retail. The British Government continues to purchase in Holland and Denmark in large quantities. Export from Ireland is prohibited, except under license, and control of local price and distribution is continued in that country. Up to the present the British Government has given no hint as to its attitude towards New Zealand cheese, the purchase of which also comes to an end on 31st July next. The eheesema:;ers also are probably considering what is to be done if no further arrangement is made to purchase their produce. All cheese is under control in the United Kingdom, British Dominions, and foreign at the one price—lffils 4d per cwt. wholesale, or C3s above the price which the Dominion producers are receiving when the cheese reaches the stores. Tho*t;ore point felt by New Zealand producers of butter, and in some respects of cheese, is that their goods are being used to balance the high prices paid not only to producers of butter and cheese in the British Isles, but to foreign nations, who are waxing rich at the British people's expense, without sharing tVifir heavy ''burdens of war taxation and the onerous conditions of living resulting from the war.
