OBITUARY.

MR JAMES HAWKINS.

The many friends of Mr. James Hawkins will regret to learn of his death, which took place at his residence, Fitzroy, yesterday. The late Mr. Hawkins, who was 58 years of age, was a native of Belfast, Ireland, and on coming to New Zeala:id settled in Auckland, where he carried on business for some time. He came to Tnranaki about 28 years ago, and has been a well-known figure in the hotel business in various parts of the province throughout the years intervening almost up to the time of his death. His last house was the Imperial Hotel, New Plymonth, on leaving which :<, short time ago he carried on a wine and spirit merchant's business in partnership with the late Mr. J. Smith. Deceased was also a very keen sportsman, and in this connection was widely known throughout New Zealand and Australia as the owner of several very good horses. He is survived by his widow and eight children, the 'latter being:—Mrs. MeCord and Miss Gladys .Tnwkins (Tasmania), and Miss Dorothy Hawkins (New Plymouth)., Mr. Arthur Hawkins (Sydney), Messrs Claude, Hector, Marty and Noel Hawkins (NewPlymouth). The interment will take place at Te Henuion Sunday.

MR. P. P. BURROWS.

The death took place on Wednesday of Mr. P. P. M. Burrows, l'Yanklcy Road, at the advanced age of 78 years. The late Mr. Burrows arrived at Auckland from Norwich, England, in the ship Victory, on January G, 1865, and practised his profession for some years prior to being appointed colonial architect, which position he held for ten years, when he again entered into private practice, but after 11 years rejoined the Government, in whose service he ren.ained until his retirement some years ago. The late Mr. Burrows is survived by three sons and four daughters, namely,' Messrs Arthur M. Burrows (Eltham), William C. Burrows (Palmcrston North), and Pierre F. Burrows (New Plymouth), Mrs. G. Heald and F. Cooney/of Auckland, and the Misses J. C. and R. I. Burrows, of New Plymouth,
