General Horwood has been appointed Chief Commissioner of Police {or London, in succession to Sir X. Macready. Mr. C. H. Cormack, for many years manager of the Bank of Ne\Y Zealand at Carterton, is retiring from,, the bank service in June after over 44 years' service.
A cable from Sydney says that Mr. \V: A. Holman (formerly Premier of New South Wales), lias notified the seniors at the Bar that he intends to apply for an appointment as King's "Counsel.
Mr. C. I\. McGuinness being the, only candidate nominated for the represent tation of the Kltham combined district on the New Plymouth Harbor Board, has been duly elected.
In reply to enquiries by the Hospital Board, telegraphic advice was received yesterday that the Minister for Public Health (the Hon. C. J. Parr) would not be able to visit New Plymouth before the middle of May. I)r. Chesson, District Health Officer in Canterbury, will take up dutv at Samoa, and will bo .succeeded by Dr.' Telford, of Whangarei. Di>. Hughes, who relieved Dr. Chesson while the latter was r,t Samoa, has received notice of bin retransfer to Auckland.
The Hon. .1. 0. Coates, Minister of Public Works, reached Wharigamomona about !) p ni. on Tuesday and went on to Matiero yesterday. To-day he will inspect the Ohura coal deposits and will catch the express for Auckland at Taumaranui at midnight.
Constable D. O'Neill, of Rahotu, who is the only officer in the New Plymouth sub-district to be selected for duty with tlie special force of police which is 'to travel through the Dominion with the Prince of Wales, left yesterday morning to join up with the unit in Auckland. Brigadier-General G. X. Johnston, C.M.G., D.5.0., who commanded the New Zealand Artillery throughout the war and afterwards took command' of the N'ew Zealand troops remaining in England, has been appointed to command the Royal Artillery of the Lowland (Territorial) Division
Lieutenant-Colonel H. E- Avery C.M.iv, D.S.C., at present Staff Officer for l Q' Duties at Defence Headquarters, has been selected to represent New Zcaland at the War Office, London The appointment dates until January of next year, when Colonel Avery will under-' take a course at the Staff' College, Camberlev.
Mr. -T. Duffy (states the Argus) leaves lutham to-day for Dunedm. He is au old resident of Eltham, having been here for about IS years. He was foreman of works for Mr. Buckland when the first tar-sealed roads were laid down •n lutham, and was for nearly neven years in the employ of the 'Eltham County Council.
The Hon. D.. H. Guthrie, Minister of Lands, will arrive in Inglewood by the ten o'clock train to-morrow morning. He will be taken for a motor drive through the district m the morning, and will receive deputations about 3.50 in the af ternoon at the County office. The deceased ladv, who was 10 .years of age, had many friends in Aiigucan circles throughout New Zeaaml. She was a daughter of Captain lot, a pioneer settler of Brightwater. A on-on, mid a granddaughter of MajorGeneral Sir Walter Gilbert, one of the conquerors of the Punjab. She leaver ft family of five sons, four daughters ami seven grandchildren.
