LOCAL AND GENERAL.
The Mayor of New Plymouth has received a. telegram from the Hon. D. H. Guthrie, Minister for Lands, stating that it is quite impossible to come to Now Plymouth on his present visit to Tarnnaki. Ife states, however, that he will be pleased to interview a deputation j from the Borough Council in regard to a Tequest for the preservation of a larger area of Saxton's Bush than has been decided upon. At yesterday's meeting of the Taranaki Hospital Board, tli£ secretary reported that the fees collected for the past year constituted a record in tho history of the hospital, both as. regards the actual amount collected and the percentage of dues receivable, which had exceeded 55 per cent. The secretary was congratulated upon the result, which he, however, attributed to tho expeditious way in which the office staff had handled the accounts during the year. The WairaTapa Daily News advises that an experienced prospector has be£u prospecting in the Tararuas for the past few weeks, and, like all his predecessors, has found gold and silver-bearing quartz. This lie has sent to Wellington, and the result of the aßsay is reported to be very satisfactory. Further than this, the prospector has discovered a huge deposit, estimated at thousands of tons, of pure white marble. This find is reported to be in the vicinity of Mount Hohlswortli, some distance further in. Considerable interest is being taken throughout the Tnglewood district in the dinner which is being held in the Inglewood Public Hall to-morrow evening to celebrate the constitution of the Inglewood County. As there appears to be a feeling abroad that the function is to be a dress out, those responsible wish it to be understood that this is not so. It is purely a dinner given by ratepayers of the district to celebrate the forward move made by the district in having attained the dignity of a county. It is a public function, open to all.
A harvest thanksgiving service will be held at Ok»to to-day, 22nd inst., et 7.30 p.m.

A whale, CO feet lopg and weighing 40 tons, has been lying on the Parade beach, Napier, for some days' (says a telegram from Napier). The Harbor Board's dredge unsuccessfully attempted to remove it by pulling, and the-smell is becoming a nuisance. Last night an attempt was to bo. made to blow it ifp and burn the remains.
Very gratifying offers of assistance in connection with the Pukekura Park £1(!00 effort are being received by Mr*. Burgess, who is at the head of the appeal. Messrs. Cock and Co. have offered a donation of £'2o, and a day or two ago Mrs. Burgess received a letter from Mr. M. Devenish, of Nelson, a resident of New Plymouth for many years, enclosing a subscription of £ I Is towards the appeal. He wrote in praise of the beauties of the park and expressed his intention of becoming an annual subscriber to its funds. Other offers of help have also been received. In noxious weeds cases hoard at the Hawera ,S.M. Court on Tuesday against P- J. Campbell and C. Campbell, which had previously been before the Court but had been adjourned so that, the Magistrate could give an opinion as to whether the sharemilker (Taylor) was the effective occupier, Mr. T. A. B. Bailey, S.M., said that in his opinion! a share-milker was a servant only, and he could not hold that a servant was an occupier within the meaning of the Act. It may be part of a contract that the weeds should be kept down, and such a condition as this might be imposed on any servant by an employer. On the joint charge, a fine of £3 was imposed, anu on the individual charges P. J Campbell was fined £"> and Colin Camn." bell £3. r
In connection with Anzac Day the custom adopted in New Plymouth of wearing sprigs of rosemary "for remembrance" is to be observed this rear. Those who have supplies are asked to inake use of them on .that day and to oher bunches for distribution to those who have none of their own. Mrs. C. H. Burgess, who has always taken a very keen interest in the observance of Anzac Day, has interested the Women's National Reserve in this matter, and they will be pleased to receive gifts for tins purpose at her rooms, Devon Street Central, to-morrow. As in past years wreaths are to he laid 011 the graves of all soldiers interred in Te Hcmii Cemetery. A native who was being examined at the Hawera Magistrate's Court 011 Tuesday concerning his failure to pay a debt for _ which judgment had been given against him, made admissions which showed a certain .-.mount of astuteness m dealing with money matters and netting the host of a creditor He had had a sum of £:ir,i> hi the bank and this was draw,, out in fairly large sums from time to time "for the sake of the iam-,-V- knowledge of the fact that he had still a sum of money to his credit vvas responsible for an attachment order being carried by one of his creditor*, whereupon the native promptly lifted the v*lu>le amount, and, accordmg to his own statement, lmnded it over to his wife. Mr. Halcombe said that another memorial to the men of the Uruti district was to be unveiled in the public cemetery on Sunday afternoon liy Mr. W. T. Jennings, M.P., the money for this having been contributed bv the people of Uruti. The chairman. In acknowledging the gift, thanked Mr. Halcombe and the Uruti settlers, and asked Mr. Halcombe as the Board's representative to convey their expressions of appreciation to the people of his district.
