EDUCATION BOARD APPOINTMENTS.
(To the Editor.) Sir,— Generally speaking, this writer agrees' with your correspondent "Disgusted" that, all other things being equal preference should be given in making public appointments to men who have dona their bit in serving the Empire in her time of stress This, however, does not include the Algies and Percys who, never got further than camps in New Zealand and whose "service" kept them well out ot harm's way. But in the case which "Disgusted" deals with, as the recent appointment by the Tarannki Education Board whs to the position next to that of secretary, surely tho soldier's champion overlooks the fact that the lady selected has been for many years In the employ, has proved herself a most competent officer, has taken full charge for a month at a time (when the secretary got his accumulated holiday), and is thoroughly conversant with all the work, particularly the red-tape requirements of the department. Would your correspondent deny her the advancement which she has earned? And where would he find among our unemployed exsoldiers one who could take up the running without having to put in a few years in qualifying for the duties? The rating as "accountant" .does not mean that any holdei of an accountancy certificate, or any ordinarj book-keeper, could fill the bill at short notice, I for the work is largely technical and calls foi 1 a lone training. Be fair, my friend I—l am, etc., , UNCONNECTED WITH THE BOARD. ' [The above puts the position fairly, and leaves nothing further to be said.—Ed.]
