On the eve of his departure for America, Mr. L. S. Tarrant was (reports the Star) farewelled by a small circle of intimate friends, and was' the recipient of a purse of sovereigns. On. April 27th, their Excellencies. will travel to Rotorun, where they will be joined the same day by His Royal Highness. On April 29th their Excellencies will leave Rotorua en route for Wellington. Mr. Henry Death, of the.Fraser Road, met with a painful accident on Saturday evening (repous the Argus). He had been spending an evening at Mr. R. Boyle's, and when leaving missed his footing and iell down over the cutting on to the road, some twelve or fifteen feet below. He sustained a broken wrist and jaw : .1 was taken to the hospital. Subsequently he was able to proceed to his home. Another of the Auckland pioneers, Mr. William Stirling, died on Tuesday last at the age of 82. He took a keen interest in the volunteering movement. He held the rank of color-ser-geant in the Royal Engineers. At Hawera, on Saturday, Mr. >S. G. Daniel, the popular postmaster, who has been transferred to Hastings, was farewelled, the Mayor (Mr. 15. Dixon) stating that Mr. Daniel had been the most obliging official Hawera had ever had, and as a reminder of the good feeling of the people of the district, he asked Mr. Daniel to accept a gold-mounted fountain pen and pencil. In the evening Mr. Daniel was farewelled by the staff, presented with a handsome dressing case, and congratulated on Ilia promotion.—Star.
