DEELEY'S SUICIDE.
GAOL OFFICIALS EXONERATED. By Telejraph.—Press Association. Wellington, April 17. This morning Mr. Riddell, S.M., held an inquiry into the death of Harry Deeley, the prisoner on remand from X almereton North on a charge of having murdered Mary Etheline Webbey on March 17.
George Crooke, chief gaoler, said thai, ey had been kept under special observation, and been placed in a cell which a patrol officer passed every halfhour. The hammock and rope were removed from tiie cell and a bed and mattress substituted. The cell knife was also removed. Witness had no reason to believe that Deeley would take his life as he did.
A verdict was returned that deceased committed suicide. The coroner added that the gaol officials had, apparently taken all reasonable precautions to prevent such an occurrence.
