COOKS' AND STEWARDS' AWARD. By Telefraph—Press Association. Wellington, April 1". The award has been filed in the Federated Cooks' and Stewards' dispute with the Union Company. It provides for an increase in pay and establishes the principle of a weekly half-holiday for stewards- The request for an annual holiday "on full pay was refused bv the Arbitration Court, Mr. McCuilough dissenting. " The hours of work at sea are ten per day, to be woried within 15 hours from the time of commencement. Work in excess is to paid for at overtime rates, 2s per hour and Is for cadets.
At terminal ports the hours of workare eight per 4ay. Provision is made tor the ; payment for work on Sundays and holidays of one extra day's sea pay. A clause provides against any acceptance by a worker under the award of tips from passengers.
TEACHERS' MARKS. \ Dunedin, April 17. The Gtago Educational Institute brought before the Hon. C. J. Parr the lack of uniformity by inspectors in awarding teachers' marks under the grading system. The Minister admitted the figures submitted to him were significant. He could not say what steps lie would take, but he would certainly take some steps at an early date with a view to getting representations made. It might be in the shape of a conference or, perhaps, by setting up an expert committee to advise him with a view to mastering the discrepancies referred to.
