Tho first turbine driven vessel! to come to New Plymouth arrived on Snturday morning. This was the Lorain (U.S.A. Line), from New York, via Auckland and Wellington. Captain Waller, harbormaster, boarded just before 7 o'clock, and had the vessel alongside tho. wharf at 7.30. Unloading operations were commenced at 9 o'clock, the cargo consisting of 15,000 cases of benzine and kerosene and 100 tons of general. The Lorain Is a well-equipped modern cargo vessel of 6861 tons gross and 4927 tons net tonnage. She Is 411& feet In length and has a beam of 55 feet. She entered the port drawing 19 feet aft. She has a good turn of speed, being reported to hnve attained 14.7 knots on trial. Captain -J. C. Amborman is In command, and has tv'th him the following officers: First, .Mr. W. E. Brown; second, Mr. Z. T, .Tones: third, Mi'. F. S. Jenks; first engineer, Mr. .T. Forsyth; first assistant engineer Mr C. Dow; second. Mr. .1. Lorburg; third. Mr. W. Hunter; chief steward, Mr. R. R. McCrary; vlre'ess operator, Mr. W. Menz; boatswain, Mr. J. McQueen. Captain R. E. Smith has been piloting the vessel round the New Zealand coast and leaves her here.
The Lorain Is expected to sail to-morrow for Brisbane. Newcastle, Sydney, New Caledonia, and Now York. THE KARAMU. There was no appearance of the Karamu from Wellington, yesterday. She is expected to arrive here early this morning. THE KOKIRI. The Kokirl is scheduled to leave Nelson to-day, and should reach this port tomorrow. THE NIAGARA. By Telegraph Press Association. Suva, April 17. Tho Niagara sailed for Auckland this morning. The passengers from Suva include 52 Indians and 21 Chinese. TUTANEICAt RETURNING, Suva, AprW 17. The Tutanekal will sail for Auckland on Sunday evening.
