THE WAR GRATUITY.
NEARLY FIVE MILLIONS PAID. By Tuienri nil.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The final stages of the payment of the war gratuity have now been entered upon, and it is expected that within a very short time the work will have been completed. Up to Saturday, April 10, 84,313 claims had been met, the amount involved being £4,0110,147 (id. In addition, some 2000 payments have been made by the StaffPaymaster in London. The amount set aside, by Parliament for gratuities lvas £5,513,000, and indications at present are that the estimate will prove exact. Of Sii.OOO odd gratuities paid up to the present, 54.~>0 men have received amounts of £IOO and over; lu,0."i!) have beqn paid sums varying from £7") to £101); and 20,070 have received payments ranging from £SO to £7"). The balance have been credited at the Post Office Savings Bank or their own private banks with amounts of less than £SO.
