SAXTON'S BUSH.
ministerial statement. PUBLIC MUST PAY FOR LARGER AREA. _ In response to representations of an influential deputation, Mr. S. G. Smith MP., recently telegraphed to the Minister of Lands (the Hon. I). 11. Guthrie) on the matter of the report that only a small portion of the estate known" as Saxton's Bush was to lie reserved as a public park, and that the greater portion of this piece of native bush would he destroyed in the process of the subamsjon of the property. Mr. Smith has received a written reply from the Minister, in which it is slated that the matter has already been "one 0 vpr .v carefully. The' estate was purchased under the Land for Settlements Act for closer settlement at a cost of £](),;,00. The Commissioner oi (*rown Lands has had the estate sulidivided, and two portions are proposed to he reserved, these being respectively oi l.i acres and r.14 acres in extent. The rest of the hush-covered land is required for settlement, purposes, and unless the local bodies- or residents can see their way to provide the necessary funds to recoup the Land for Settlements Account with the cost of any additional reservation of native bush, the Minister states he cannot see his way to authorise such to be made.
