ALLEGED LIBEL.
POLITICIAN AND NEWSPAPER. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Melbourne, April 14. An action has been commenced, in which Mr. Alfred Ozanne, formerly member for Oorio in the House of Representatives, is claiming £SOOO for allegel libel by the newspaper Geelong Advertiser. Plaintiff stated that the action was taken as the result of itihree articles published in 'the 1917 Federal election campaign, which he considered caused his defeat. The defence stated that when the articles were puHjshed Mr. Hughes had issued a message received from General Binhvood, embodying a report by General Monash on the conduct of plaintiff, who was then a sergeant in the A.1.F., which stated that he was absent without leave and whs struck oft the strength on the eve of going to France. General Monash, giving evidence, said Ozanne spoilt the record of the 3rd Division, as he was the only one absent Without leave out of 20,000. He recommended that Ozanne should be eourt-mar-tialled, but this was not dona.
