Inspector W. Hendry, of the Wanganui Police District, is at present in New Plymouth on official business. Colonel Campbell, secretary to the Treasury, is going on leave to England. Mr. lisson will take over his duties. A Berlin cablegram states that the exKaiserin is seriously ill, mid her daughter, the Duchess of Brunswick, lias been called to her bedside.

Among the passengers who returned by the Corinthie on Saturday were Mr. ■fl. T- Lovell (Hawera), Miss A. Turton (Wellington), and Mrs. X. L. Joll (Hawera). Mr. S. G. Smith, M.P., mentioned to the Education Board yesterday that the new Minister of Education, the Hon. CJ. Parr, would visit the Taranaki district in the near future, to inquire into any matters requiring attention. The Education Board yesterday decided to appoint Miss S. Thomson, at present employed in the Board's office, to the positon of accountant, rendered vacant by the resignation of Mr. E. G. Johnson. It was also decided to offer the position of senior clerk to Mr. S. Dowland, of Diuiedin. A cable from Capetown reports tne death of' Sir Hamilton Goold Adams, late Governor of Queensland, from pneumonia. He arrived in Capetown recently with his wife and t'hildreii for ft holiday tour, intending to re-visit places in Africa where he served as administrator and soldier, but he contracted a fatal chill.
