CASUAL CLOSING OF SCHOOLS

- INCONVENIENCE TO BOARD'S OFFICERS. Tlic senior inspector of schools for Taranuki reported to the Education Board yesterday on tlie above matter in the following terms:— I beg to draw attention to the neglect, of notioe to the Board of the closing of schools on special occasions. This has caused great inconvenience not only to the inspectors, but also to the organising teachers, physical instructors, and agriculture instructors. On a recent occasion I found all the schools in the vicinity of AVliangamomona closed for sports without any notice to the Board's office. On another day in the same weelc I found the head teacher of one of these schools absent, and in the following week the physical instructor arrived at the same school, only to find it closed for a picnic. These,, occurrences are typical of what happens too often. I suggest, as some school committees fail to observe the requirements of the regulations, that it be made a regulation that the teachers be required to send notice to reach the Board's office before the preceding Saturday whenever the schools are closed on occasions otlier than those specially mentioned in the Board's regulations. The postage or cost, of* telegram can be obtained from the school committee. The inspector's recommendation was adopted.
