Hopkins, bookseller, will receivs vrompc attention.) ..;■• SCHOOL COMMITTEE. ..... ■ :■<, ... » , ~-*r"-*- April 10. The- School Committee met on Thursday evening, Mr. .). W. Boon presiding. Tlie Board notified tht following appointments: Miss D. Lawn, fifth assistant; Mr. B. L. Stantan, temporary tenth assistant; Miss M. Giddy, pupil teacher; Mr. Arthur W. Lawn, probationer.—Approved. The Board forwarded a copy of a memorandum from the Chief School Medical Officer relative to school lunches, and toothbrush drill, and the necessity for a high standard of cleanliness in regard to school premises generally was also impressed. The secretary of the Children's Committee in connection with the Prince of Wales' visit wrote asking the School Committee to take over the arrangements in connection with catering and other matters pertaining to the welfare of the large number of children expected in town on the 30th inst. It wa3 resolved that the secretary he advised that the Committee, not being officially represented on any committee in connection with the Prince of Wales' visit, is unable to comply with.the request, as they have no knowledge of the requirements. Messrs, McDonald and Smart were appointed the visiting committee for the month. It was decided to hand over work in connection with the cocoa scheme to the incoming committee. The Committee decided to make an urgent request to the Board to place various rooms in the Technical School in a better condition as regards painting and renovation. GENERAL. The Prince of Wales' Reception Committee met last night, the Mayor (Mr. .1. W. McMillan) presiding over a good attendance. It was reported that the R.S.A. executive had promised to arrange for as large a muster of returned soldiers as possible. It was decided to ask tho Education Board to leave the arrangements for the children in the hands of the committee. It was decided that a special area on Broadway should be barricaded off for the accommodation of school children.
The annual minting nf the Stratford A. and P. Association, arranged to have been held to-day, was abandoned owing to there not being a quorum present. It is unlikely that a further meeting will be called until after the election is over,
Three additional sections of photographs for the .Stratford Roll of Honor have been hung in the corridor of the municipal chambers. A few more photographs have yet to be added before the Roll will be complete. The question of the proposed new post office for Stratford was considered at a meeting of representatives of the Borough Council, Railway League and Chamher of Commerce yesterday, and as the outcome of the meeting the following letter lias been forwarded by the town clerk to the Postmaster-General: "I am directed to draw your attention to the urgent need of speedily progressing with the new post office. The present accommodation is totally inadequate for the requirements of the town and district and great inconvenience is being suffered in consequence. It is desired that your attention he directed to the fact that representations were made before the war, urging the need of a new post office and it was admitted that the need was great. Owing to war conditions our needs were not pressed by us during the war period and the inconvenience has grown apace. The meeting also desire to adviss you that they would greatly appreciate the opportunity of viewing the plans of the proposed new post office before they are finally approved. They also desire to urge at this juncture that provision be made for a clock tower."
At the same combined meeting the •proposed alterations to the Stratford railway station were discussed, and a letter has been sent by the town clerk to the General Manager of Railways urging the need for the speedy commencement of the work. "The' inconvenience and danger caused by the railway crossings have been the subject of representations from this town on many occasions," states the town clerk in his letter. "Only a week ago a lady wa« capsized by a shunting train when driving a gig at the Regan Street crossing. and the menace to the lives of school children is always with us. The leased areas have been a problem for many years and we desire to see improvements effected there as speedily as possible, to the credit of the town and the Railway Department. We trust that in view of the unqualified approval by the townspeople of the Railway Department's plans that those plans will be carried into effect without delav."
