UNSETTLED LABOR
STRIKES IN AMERICA. NEW YORK TRAFFIC DISLOCATED. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. ' Received April 11, 5.5 p.m. New York, April 9. Nearly fifty thousand railroad workers in more than fifteen cities from New York to San Francisco are on strike, demanding increased pay. The strike is i unauthorised by the union officials. [ Chicago and New York'are facing a serious food shortage. Officials declare the railroad traffic is jnly fifty per cent, of the normal. More than twenty - five railroads are affected, New York, April 10. The employees of the Hudson and Manhattan "tubes" voted to go on strike this morning, thus completely tying up the New York suburban traffic. The Cleveland correspondent of the New York Times says a statement has been signed by the chiefs of four big transportation brotherhoods, declaring the purpose of the present strike is to destroy the railroad 'brotherhoods of the United States, and to promote the single union idea—Aus.-N.Z, Cable Assn.
BRITISH LABOR TROUBLES. RAILWAYMEN WANT MORE PAY. received April 11, 5.5 p.m. London, April ft. The railvvaymen have applied for an all-round increase of £1 weekly, apart from the increases from the sliding wale. The executive of Llie National Union of Raihvaymen state that general dissatisfaction with small increases under the sliding scale exists, as tlisy are inadequate to meet the extra cost of living. Moreover, the court of enquiry with reference to the dockers recommended a minimum of lCs daily, and ihe miners have been offered 'a minimum increase of 2s daily.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
