TURF TOPICS.
(Br "Moiuroa.")
i Avondale races to-day. Wellington on Thursday nest. Philomela Is on the up-grade again.' The Feildlng lawn was overcrowded thi3 week, and enlargement Is hadly required. When Movement fell at Feildlng It was her first unset In twenty jumping races. Percy Johnson has the Imported Hallowmas here now. Hallowmas should not lack patronage. Catalini- registered another, third at Pending. She must have cost her owner a tidy sum of late. Sail Homerin well this week, and a Rood hurdle race should fall to him this winter. Hlgnnrella. Jumped slovenly at Feildlng. He was not the only one that was held up by the stiff, upright fences. Polthojue was running on nicely at the end cf the Kawakawa Hurdles, and he looks very fit at present. All Talk's rider tried to win the Kawakawa Hurdles all the way, but Zola wore him down In the straight. Nevertheless, All Talk is a good one. Blackhead (All Black—Gossip) is- as big a colt as Golden Bubble, and he would hold his own anywhere. He is the rare cm of a Iterby colt. Gazlqite la. in good form now, and the Easter Handicap winner should start a hot order In the Autumn Handicap at Avondnfo to-day. The successes of Arrowsmith and Sasannf at Rlccarton caused joy amongst local punters. Gray piloted seven winners at the meeting. Pure Laziness cracked It for a win on Wednesday, and might be capable of repeating the dose this afternoon. Landslide looks hardest. Tenacious has a lot of weight In the Ml. Eden Steeples, but, it will be hard to pick one to beat him over the distance. If Cynic is eautfit In a galloping humor he should have something to say in the settlement of the Hiudles at Avondale this afternoon. Khartoivav, however, may be mote reliable. Bockfleld 13 a greatly improved sprinter, and even 9.8 may not stop his victorious run at Avondale to-day. Arrowsmith is set to give away plenty of weight in his Trentham engagements, but he will be favorite in whatever handicap he starti. Molyneaut, who showed good. form in Australia, won very easily at FeUdlng, and looks like winning again shortly. Rangiata is a great track horse, but she failed to show up either day at Fending, though well backed by her connections. Prodigal drew the outer in the Maiden on Monday, and had no chance from the bop-off The Digger, by Campflre—Roscrea, is not a brilliant customer, but he is a sticker, and should come good In time.
Achillion is still running without luck, another brace of seconds being his share at Fellding.
The short straight at Feildlng was no uso to Client. After coming round the Held in the Cup at the home turn, he finished brilliantly, but the post came too soon. Maurice McCaxten handled him nicely. Red Ribbon, carrying over two thousand tickets in the Feildlng Cup, Tan like a big goat, but she went kinder for Ashlev Reed on the second day, and finished up in second berth.
Nobleman was one of the unlucky horses at Feildlng. He was galloped on in the Cup, and when finishing, strongly in the Easter Handicap the second day was squeezed back in the straight and lost whatever chance he had.
Rlsingham did not appear to be handled wisely In the Feildlng Cup. but McFlynn came down to ride hioh on the second day and his party went for "evens." Risingham received some attention from another horse early in the race, and though finishing on strongly he could not quite reach All Over, who was prominent all tho way. Mr. J. J. Corry was at Feildlng to see Imaribbon run, and he was very pleased with the dual success. Though not aristocratically bred, Imarlbbon is a nice mare to have in the stable.
Simon newr looked like getting beaten either day.at Tending, and nobody begrudged the persevering and patient Harry for his successes.
Jutland scored on overdue win in the Manganone Handicap, but on tho second day, Santorlni made him look very cheap. Santorini led all tho way, and coming up the straight was calmly licking his proboscis I Ruddy had bad luck at Bulls, and again at Pending on Monday, but on the second day the longer distance suited him nicely, and his party had a royal win.
Pnssln' Through was rather unlucky each day at Feiidlng, but when he meets a smaller field will carry our money. ■ The Gulantorte gelding is improving at the barrier, and gets on his feet, like lightning.
Lady Paula is a difficult .mare to manage in a big field, but there is no doubt about her pace. She will pay her way later on Minsk, by Martian—Stephanie, was bought by Mr. AttHeld for a. brood mare, but she can travel fast and may be raoedi iis winter. The hard race, she ran on Monday knocked her out, but she should be all the better for the galloping. Kinsetn led all the way in the Halcombe Welter, but failed badly in better company on the second day. trcr party backed her as if she was a certainty. Sweet Memory travels very fast for five furlongs, but after that the jockey could get off and race her home. She got anything hut. a good passage in the big sprint the second day.
Before Haversack was allowed to start In the Halcombe Welter, the stewards held an inquiry into the marc starting in Mr. R E Laurent's name, but no action was taken. carried a ton of money in the Mtiklno Welter, on the.second day" and'ran a fine rare, but 10.3 stopped her at tne finish: They ran the 'sei'en furlongs m'i.» B —a- good -jo. -••-.,
form is a great beginner, but five furlongs Is about the length of his tether at present. He will strip better nest time They voted All Cerise unbeatable In the fl':;;nt:; Stakes on the second dav, but Tommy Ling's Ally was In trouble all the way. With a :c:ent run she might have won. P'ive Cullinane hrn!:e .it for a win at Fading with Crucelle, a full-sister to Slg--f"".!:•. She finished fast mi the outside lr.'l -won nicely, paying the best dlvid.-nd -of •iw meeting ■trlniro w:-s produced on the second day at V"d : ;:L r . hut wrs made too lamc-h «>a<> of and .":.:icd to see the trip out
