There is a shortage of kauri timber again. A letter has been received by a Wellington firm, in which the managing director of a big Auckland milling concern writes:—Wo are at the present time out. of kauri lops. Wc are expecting logs in about a month's time, but unfortunately we have several months' arrears of orders to cnt. The kauri timber is heins exported to Australia. It is estimated that if the Government would seo to it that New Zealand's demands were first met, many builders, cabinet-makers, and carpenters would not be faced with the present difficulty. At the present rate of cutting and export it would be impossible to buy kauri at any price in New Zealand. and no system of afforestation would brine up the supply of kauri in flftseu or fifty years,
