(From Our Own Correspondent.) (All communications, letters, etc. left with Mr. E. J. Hopkins, bookseller, will receive urompt Attention.) April 8. Rain continued to fall very heavily last night and this morning, but the weather cleared this afternoon. Up till 8 o'clock this morning, 3.3 inches foil, the figures lip till noon not being available. The heavy downpour interfered with telephone communications a good deal, but otherwise no serious dnmnge is reported to have occurred. As a result of the rain several sports fixtures had to be postponed. Mr. G. R. Cooper, at present inspector of post offices in the southern districts of the South Island, has been appointed postmaster at Stratford. Mr. T. Purcell, the present postmaster, will shortly retire from the service.
The accommodation at the Stratford Post Office is at present severely overtaxed, and there is also a shortage of private letter boxes. Some time ac;o it was decided to instal twentv new boxes, hut after they had been made hy the Public Works Department, it was found impossible to obtain K-.i.'ncrent locks. It is difficult, therefore, to s:iv when the new boxes will be available for use. There were seventeen sittings of the Stratford Magistrate's Court during the quarter ended on March 31, six of which were presided over by a Magistrate, and eleven by Justices of the Peace. The number of cases heard by the Magistrate was 06, the amount sued for being £1778 13s, of which £953 18s 3d was recovered. STRATFORD A. AND P. ASSN. ANNUAL REPORT. The annual report of the Stratford A. and P. Association for the year ended February 2:1. to be presented at the annual meeting 0 f the. Association tomorrow afternoon, is a? follows: The membership of the Association lias been well maintained 2.">l> fresh names having been added to the books. At. The splendid support vceoived in the w:|.y, of donations anil trophies for special purposes ha= been very largely responsible for (he satisfactory financial position, and while hoping that the time uniy not be far distant wii'-n the Association can be unan.'cd without hnvino- to call on the generosity of the public, it. is apparent tfuit but for !ii:s assistance we would be in circumstances different from those we find ourscivcs in to s'art the new financial ve<jr. ! he annua' show held on Xovemher'Sfith the 27th., produced what was jwobablv t.ie finest display of dairy stork seen on any show ground in the Dominion, ont rip;- in nil sections being in cv>ss of recent years. The resources of the Society were taxed to the utmost, "■nvoreil with fine weather, the fate taking's established a record, while the oiher sources of revenue were swollen m a like manner. It has become increasingly apparent that the accommodation for valuable stock is totally inadequate for it,- requirements, and' that the .Society in order to keep its plat* with kindred societies, will have to seriously eonside- a scheme to ;n»et the present day demands. The assistance rendered bv the various supporters of the different breeds of cattle and sheep enable the society to offer considerably more attractive prize money than has been the case heretofore. While feeling sure that this will be maintained, it is hoped that exhibitors and breeders whose interest lies more in the direction of the horse classes will help to raise the level of this section to a higher pitch than is possible under present conditions. The thanks of the society are due to all the willing woi-Kers who helped so materially to achieve the success we have had: to the ladies, who assisted in the stock and other branches of the show, and to the Press who at all times gave us their valued support. The balance-sheet shows that the receipts amounted to £3425 12s sd, including a credit balance brought forward of £927 9s Sid, and the expenditure to £2ISS 10s lid, leaving a credit balance of £1240 Is 6d. The assets of the Association amount to £3BBI 9s 7d, and the liabilities to £2641 8s Id. *
