DISTRICT NEWS.
PUNGAREHU. (From Our Own Correspondent.) A motoring party en route to New Plymouth from Opunake, direction met with a mishap on Wednesday of last week. On approaching the sharp turn after passing Parlhakiv Road, the driver (a lady) encountered two drays proceeding In the opposite direction. To enable them to pass, the car was forced to turn up a small bank, with the result that the car capsized, the occupants being lucky to escape with a shaking. With the help of the Council's workmen, who wero In the vicinity, the car was righted. Although slightly damaged the car was workable. There was a Rood attendance of scholars at the Pungarelm School on Wednesday, 31st March, the occasion being an inspection by Inspector Bnllimtyne. The Bahotu Football Club had their Initial practice last Saturday afternoon. The club Is entering two teams this year, a senior and junior teum, and the players were busy on Saturday looking out likely material for their respective teams. Now that the boys are all back, the officials have some good t.n lent to choose from, and It appears certain that the club will ho much stronger than last year. There appears to have been some mlsiir-Y?-ntandlnc over the half-holiday question. Wednesday, the usual day, has been gazetted for the Opunake town district, whereas Saturday has been gazetted for the Jlsmont County, which controls the small townships surrounding Opunake. Progress is shown all along the coastal districts. The town of Opunake is an instance of this, and other places follow closely. Roads have been wonderfully Improved, and to-day there are dozens of valuuble cars all along the coast. The Kgmont County Council at Its last meeting dLscussed the question of the ever increasing cost of road maintenance due to the heavy traffic. It was the general opinion that It would be necessary to raise the rate nets year. Sales of land are constantly reported In these parts, prices being on the up grade. A big deal was recently made. Messrs. Mofflt and Goodwin disposed of a portion of their farm (250 acres) situated on Piyigarehu Road to a Lepperton buyer. The price was In tin* vicinity of £7O, The new purchaser Intends to go in for milking with a herd of 100 cows. This is good news for suppliers. Sir. and Mrs. H. Layman, who have farmed In the district for many years, contemplate retiring from farm life, and have purchased a home in New Plymouth. General farm work Is again proceeding satisfactorily in our district, horse teams being busy turning over the land with the ploughs, mill miicli reiv land Is being brought under for the first time. Preparatory work in some caaes, previous to laying down the areas in grass or crops is also well unaer way. The milk supply to the local dairy factory Is keeping up well, due to the excellence of the feed. Dairying, generally speaking, is now tapering off, but most of the farmers have done really well, and the respective outputs of factories have been very gratifying indeed. The cattle and sheep being forwarded from this and surrounding districts to the freezing works are of good average quality. The local flaimlll has been closed for the season. The workmen have been transferred to Waverley. where operations will be commenced at the flasmlll In that district Kaster holidays, as usual, passed off very quietly here. The local stores were closed from Thursday evening until Tuesday morning.
