STREETS WORK. The streets subcommittee recommended as follows:—(a) That in view of the fact that a loan of £55,000 has previously been raised by the Borough, the proposed loan of £55,000 for streets, water and sewerage be increased to £57,000, to obviate any difficulty which might otherwise arise in connection with the payment of interest coupons, (b) That until the poll for new loan has been taken, the Com/mittee is unable to reeommendVjvny programme for metalling works during ihe winter months. (This is in reply to a. communication from the Borough Engineer suggesting that .short lengths of certain streets be metalled, and enquiring whether it is proposed to undertake any metalling works from the general account this year. The Committee are against any capital expenditure being m'ade from general account), (c) That tho Borough Engineer be authorised to proceed with the following works, chargeable to t.he £.10,800 loan account: — I. Mangorei Road, tarring from Devon to Ki.mu Streets. 2, Dawson Street, tarring from Devon to Powdcrham Streets, 3. Completion of Gover Street in accordance with the agreement with the Taranalci Jockey Club, with the exception of tarring the footpaths. (With regard to item 3, the Committee strongly recommend that the tarring of the footpaths bn not proceeded with. That the Borough Engineer be instructed to submit an estimate of the cost of asphalting the footpaths. That if the cost of asphalting the footpaths on both sides of tiie street is beyond the means of the Council, an endeavor be made to induce the Jockey Club to accept the asphalting of the footpath on one side of the street in lieu of tarring the paths on both sides), (d) That in regard to the accumulating of supplies of gravel for next season the Borough Engineer be instructed to continue obtaining supplies from Napier and from the Waiwakaiho.
GENERAL. The question of continuing the subsidy to the Citizens' Band was referred to in a letter from Major F. W. Sandford (the Council's representative on the committee), who intimated that in order to retain the conductor the committee had had to increase his salary by £!io per annum. —The matter was referred to the Estimates Committee.
The Council declined a request by Mr. .T. S. Connett, on behalf of Mrs. K. A. Snell, Powderham Street, that the requirements of the by-law be waived so as to enable her to so subdivide her property to effect a sale of the front portion with a house thereon.
