NOTES ON THE RACING.
(By Wire.—Special to Daily News.)
, Auckland, Last Night. There -was Rood weather and yood racing for Easter Monday at Kllerslic. After being unlucky in the Easter Handicap, Maioha, with Deeley in the saddle, was favorite in the Stewards' Handicap, with Esthonia well supported The latter was up third early behind Matatane and War Tank, and when the straight came in sight Esthonia had command. Trespass and Tamaroa entered into a ding-dong finish with half heads between the trio, the order being Esthonia, Tamaroa and Trespass. Maioha, who was fourth, was unlucky in the early part, but finished on well] The public pounced on Tinokaha as the best of good things for the Mangere Handicap, which was composed of a moderate lot of hacks. Robinson had the favorite to the front from an outside position early, and thereafter she wort throughout, eventually winning by a length and a half from an outsider in No Bother, with Loved One third, and Explode fourth.
The Victoria Handicap saw Mr. AHboji's pair, Landslide and Illumination favorites over the Tafanaki horse Pure Laziness, but the latter could not go the pace set. Illumination and Landslide made the running till well in the straight, when Miss Muriel, who ran a fair race in the Champagne Stakes on Saturday, came fast and defeated laudelide by a length, with Illumination third. The winner is by Lucullus, Whose progeny show speed. Miss ("Jold evidently improved with her race of Saturday, for she ran past ( Tinohoro early in the St. Leger, and then never looked like suffering defeat Rose Queen, who wits favorite and finished second, may have been closer if handled differently. Rebuff had no difficulty in defeating Tinolioro for third monev.
The St Oe.c.rge's Handicap went to that great little horse, Uncle Ned, who '.lMb second favorite to Vagabond. The letter was taken to the front eavlv, which lactic? did not suit him. Ho.vei'er, he should he kept in mind. P.jpnehtcr got fo the front when thev .settled, down, 'but, in the straight was beaten. Here Taiamai, Uncle Ned, r.nd Mangauiahoe entred into a great finish, Uaelc Ned Pi t.;vh v , the honors fv,-,:n Mangamahoe, who finished fast, wMi Taiamai Hose up.' Cynic was another showing some speed in fourth place. Punka was in the picture in -he straight, and, as a result of Hewitt coming in too close on her with Vr. >le Ned, he received a caution. The failure of Um-le Neil to .secure a place in the Easter is attributed to the feet that he got the bit over his tongue in the race. (iaziquc failed to stay on as well as expected. The Steeplechase proved a. good thing. for No Surrender after Battletide, '\'iran, and Tenacious met with falls. Battletide was remounted and (rained third money' behind No Surrender and Jacaranda. The winner is one of Mr. Williamson's'team, and looks like proving a useful fircat Northern candidate-. He is by Salvadan and knows the Ellcrslie country well. Tiattlctide was going on well at the time of his fall on the hill the last trip..
Hymestra and Ruatnra must have felt some effects of their Easter Handicap exertions, for both failed to gain a dividend, though Hymeatvn mads a bold Vnd
in third place behind Crowhurst and Queen Abbey, who were the leading pair once they settled down. Crowhurst is on the improve. Rockfield was fourth anil Rmitara fifth. The fair showing of General Advance in the Easter Handicap was responsible for ()\Shea's mount being made a good favorite for the Auckland Welter. He duly won, but only by a narrow margin from Archie, who is on the improve, and who got to the front from Farce early, and made the pace willing in front until General Advance came along in the straight and took the big end of the stake. Bitholia, who finished third, should be remembered as one regaining form, while Woody Glen, the fourth, was only beginning to gallop when too late. He is a moody customer. CHRISTCHURCH RACES.
