DAIRY PRODUCE.
QUESTION OF CONTROL. Two days ago a cablegram was published in which mention was made of the possibility of the continuance of the control in Britain of dairy produce, as at present. The cablegram indicated that there was a probability .that the Government in England would refuse to remove the control from these products, and it was further stated that the pre? sent arrangements were unfair in that the control operated onlv against Dominion shipments, whereas Irish butter was coming on to the market free.
The position regarding the future shipment and Hale of New Zealand butter and cheese has not changed for some time- When the question was first raised some months ago, the Prime Minister, with the consent of the producers' representatives, made inquiries from the British Government as to their wishes in the matter. In reply, the British Government inquired on what terms the- New Zealand producers would be prepared to sell. As the New Zealand producers wish to have a free market, and as the telegram was not definite in some particulars to admit of a direct answer being given, Jlr. Mnssey made further inquiries by cable. No conclusive reply has yet been received. The New Zealand Government has not yet had advice as to whether the British Government intends to continue' the commandeer or na;t. Mr. Massoy has expressed his personal opinion that the control of butter may be continued, but that ha (locs not think there will be any control jn respect, of cheese.
