TARANAKI EASTER TOURNAMENT. IrENTOG DAY'S RESULTS. The annual Taranakl championship meeting, held under the auspices nf the "New Plymouth Club, was opened on the Watwakaiho links on Saturday. It is fifteen rears since the Prst Easter meeting was held—on the old nine-.iole course at Westnwn. whlrh is now going to be cut up for building—and eaeli year has seen the tournament Increase in popularity, until today it Is regarded as one of the most popular zoning fixtures of New Zealand. This year there are -visiting competitors from Ohrlstchurch. Wellington. Manawatu. Hawke's Bay, Wanganui, and Auckland, while all the Taranakl clubs are well represented. A splendid programme absorbing three days has been drawn up, and there Is every indication of a most successful gathering. ■ The conditions on Saturday were perfect —a calm, dull day, and the course in splendid order. Some good golf was seen, and the standard of nlay was' high. The best round of thirty-six holes was done by G. Sim (of Palmerston North), who returned a total of 163 with two cards of 83 and 8(1. .T. V. Ritchie (Stratford) and A. E. Ekstedt (Pal--merston North) wore one stroke more, and then the scores of the sixteen players to qualify for the championship gradually Increased until the sixteenth competitT's was ITJ. Nothing above this figure qualified. It Is Interesting to Tomember that last Easter the best round was 178 and the sixteenth man to qualify returned 192—clearly Illustrating a distinct improvement in the play this year compared with last year. The best e'ghteen holes on Saturday was done by Ekstedt (791, and this Included a three at the home hole, the bogey for which is five. The morning medal match was won by S. R. rmrlow (Inglewood) with 85—11—74; and the afternoon medal match was won by G. K. Deighton with 811—13—73. The teams match was won by Manawatu. The arrangements, for which Mr. J Paton was primarily responsible, enabled all Uio play to proceed smoothly. Details of the play are:—
