Guanaco, who was not much of a success on the flat, is reported to bo taking kindly to the jumping business at Bastings. Sportsmen will regret to he;ir that the wellknown Wanganui sport "Bill" Corby is laid aside with a severe attack of pleurisy. All will wish the old sport a speedy recovery. A contemporary haR same hard words to saj« concerning the horsemanship at the Itaugltikel meeting. From personal observation this scribe is of opinion that some (alleged) jockeys could not ride in a can—with the tailboard upl Master Moutoa and Fisher looked very well when shipped by the Ulimaroa for Sydney on Thursday. with careful placing they should pay their way on the other side Mr. F. Easton has his mind set on ihe Grand National Steeplechase again this vear and his hopes centre on Master Strowan,"wno is reported to be well forward for this tlmo of the year. The Australian Jockey Club's autumn meeting opens at Randwick to-day. Tne principal event to be decided on the opening dasis the Doncaster Handicap, one milo, ro'r which Chrysolaus, Gambler's Gold, George Graves, and Red Dome are favorites. Chrysolaus failed at Flemtngton, but at Rosehill on March 20th., he carried 9.0 and won the Railway Handicap, seven furlongs, very easily iu 1.26%. The Sydney Cup will be decided on Monday. Latest Sydney flies show that the champion Artilleryman Is a hot order.. Poltrel, Kennaquhair, lan 'Or, and Macadam also have backers. Artilleryman and roitrei we-e both returned winners at Rosehill, but the former' 3 performances wero easily the best Mr. S. J. Watt won a race at Rosehill last month with All Aboard (All Black—Float). The New Zealand-bred gelding carried 10.2, was first favorite, and bent a big field pointless. W. H. McLachlnn was aboard. Our old friend Bunting made a big effort to land the Rosehill Handicap the. same afternoon, and only went under to Poitrel by a head. Bunting started at a forlorn price, and returned more than tho winner on the place totalisator. It seems a strange coincidence that Poitrel has been the means of bringing about the downfall of many brilliant New Zealamlers, Gloaming and Desert Gold included; and on each occasion the crack Australian has Just scored by the narrowest of margins. Stan Reid, who was recognised as one of the most capable hurdle horsemen in the Dominion, continues to ride winners In Australia. At. Caulfleld recently he won the Narong Hurdles on Thaletas, and the Gordon Steeplechase On .lack Friar. •Most people would'have Uk<id to see Amy ! thas measure strides, with Arrowsmlth In tho C.J.C.
