AMERICA AND THE TREATY. RATIFICATION DEADLOCK. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received April 1, 5.5 p.m. Washington, March 31. The Republican Leaders have introduced a resolution into the Senate declaring the state of war with Germany ended. The motion was referred to the Foreign Relations Committee, with the object of it reappearing in the Senate on Friday, the third anniversary of the declaration of war by 'the United States.
President Wilson is determined to smash the peace resolutions by sheer inactivity. He keeps the ambassadors at bay and public affairs remain in suspense. Tho President bolieves the country is with him against the reservations, and insists on giving the population a chance of declaring itself at the election.
Tt is possible President Wilson will try a term of the Presidency with the Covenant as his platform. Otherwise ,he will dominate Mr. MacAdoo (formerly Secretary of the Treasury) on the same ticket. Actually the country is indifferent to the Treaty fight; also the Turkey, Adriatic, and naval programmes, whilst they are only moderately interested in Germany's restoration, but they decidedly ridicule the Allies' surrendering to the spectre of Bolshevism.—Aus.-N.Z.
