A London cable says Mr. Montague Norman has been elected Governor oi 1 tlio Dank of England and Mr. Trotter Deputy-Governor. -Mr- VV. A. Harvey, formerly of the firm of Jagger and Harvey, Auckland, died this week, in his 74th year, after one week's illness. Mr. Harvey joined the firm named 40 years ago and was well known in shipping circle.?. Sergeant Ilenrv, who lias boon on holiday in South Canterbury for the past fortnight, returned to Hawera on Wednesday. Sergeant Reid, who has been relieving in Hawera, returned to Wanganui on Thursday.
At the Supreme Court, Wellington, on Tuesday, .Mr. J. .T. Bayle.v-(of the firm of O'.Dea, Haselden and Baylcy) was admitted as a barrister, on* the motion of Messrs Young, Neave and Courtney. Mr. A. C. Buist, who for some time past has been in charge of the produce department with the Farmers' Co-op. Society at Hawera, left on Thursday for Palmerston North, where he enters* into business on his own account in partnership with Mr. Lockart. A cable from London says knighthoods have been granted to four London war correspondents:--Messrs Philip Gibbs (Daily Chronicle), Percival Phillips (Daily Express), Perry Robinson (Daily News), and Herbert Russell (The Times). Mr. Russell is a son of Mr. Clark Russell, the novelist. A nnble from London says that included in the Easter Honors are Mr. .Massey (war correspondent), Mr. Perris (journalist.), Mr. Chandler (war correspondent), who are made Commanders of the Order of the, British Empire. Lieut. Stenlionse and Lieut. Wilde, of the Sbackleton Expedition, are made Olliceiw of the Order. Mr. E. Ashor, who is leaving shortly to take up a position in Auckland, was made the recipient of a sold silver tea service on a salver, by the members of the firm and staff of, Messrs Burgess, Eraser, Ltd., New Plymouth. Mr. C. H. Burgess, who made a presentation, referred to the. loyal service which Mr. Aslier had given to his employers in the position of accountant, which he had occupieu for over 20 years, and wished him and his family success and happiness in the new sphere to which they were going. Mr. Asher suitably acknowledged the gift, and good wisiies. Mr. L. C. 11. Dawson, of Wellington, who has been for some time in the Defence Department, has been appointed to succeed Mr. Asher. The Inglewnod Presbyterian Church tendered a farewell social to their minister and his wife, Mr. and Mrs, Ireland, who are leaving this week for Hulls. Rev. 0. Blundell, of New Plymouth, presided over a large gathering of members and friends, and was supported by the ministers of the Methodist and Anglican Churches and by the OSicers Commanding the Salvation Army. Appreciative references were made jn the valedictory speeches to the active part Mr. ami Mrs. Ireland have taken in every movement for the good of the community during their stay of four years in the district and general regret was expressed at their departure. Mr. A. Lindsay presented Mr, and Mrs. Ireland, on behalf of the congregation, with, a rug and well filled wallet.
