SWIMMING.
CARNIVAL AT THE BATHS. A SPLENDID EXHIBITION. The swimming carnival held at tho New Plymouth Municipal Baths hist eveulug proved most luccessfui, lioth from the point of view of tho programme presented and the attendance of the public. It is the purpose of the Borough Council to endeavour la popularise tho baths and provide additional .facilities for swimmers and also to ono&urnge be»;iniiea's In the art. Any profit.:; from such functions will no! go into the ordinary colters of the Council, but will he spent in the manner suggested. Last night's carnival was arranged by .Mr. It. Day, under whoso department the baths have now been placed, and he was ably assisted by the custodian, and also by the following gentlemen: Messrs. 1,. It. Webster, It. L. .MeDrew, Darling and Kirk (judges), Lewis Stephenson, and Saunders lhandicappers). Mr. N. A. Christiansen gave some splendid exhibitions of fancy diving and swimming, and concluded his performance with what is known as the ".Monte Christo Act," In which he enters Urn water from tho high diving board; in <i hu?e sack, which after bein;; well soaked wllh Kerosene, is set alight. The plunge Into the water of this flaming mass is a sensational turn, and Mr. Christiansen, after releasing himself while In the water, was warmly applauded for his effort. Another spectacular Item was the appearance of a "real, live mermaid" in tho bath. A number of competitive events were included hi tho programme, and produced some excellent swimming. There was close competition and many of the events were won practically on the touch. The relay race was a splendid contest.
