THE PRINCE

WELCOME AT BARBADOS.

TRAGEDY OF THE VOYAGE,

fly Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright.

Received March 30, 10.30 p.m.

Barbados, March 29. When no further hope was entertained on the Renown of recovering Gunner Lush, who fell overboard on tlie i!4th inst, the ship was stopped, and a most touching funeral service was held on the forecastle deck, the whole ship's company being drawn up with the band and a firing party of the dead man's comrades.

The Prince and his staff attended, togethei with the ship's officers in full uniform and wearing their swords. The chaplain conducted the service, standing on an elevated structure beneath the muzzles of the gigantic 15-inch guns. "Abide With Me," was sung with a band accompaniment and a subdued roll of drums, the whole ship's company of 1400 standing bare-headed. The marines fired three volleys, and a bugler sounded the Last Post, the mournful notes floating away on the breeze over the spot where the unfortunate gunner was last seen sinking in the sea. The Renown then resumed her voyage and increased her speed to reach Barbados on schedule time. The cruiser Calcutta, with Admiral Everett on board, was sighted early on the morning of the 25th approaching the Renown as an escort. When she was close, a cutter from the Renown was lowered, rowed to the Calcutta, and brought back the flag lieutenant with dispatches. The Prince had an enthusiastic reception in Barbados, and entertained the Governor and leading residents at a dinner and a dance on board the Renown. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. VISIT TO SAN FRANCISCO. Received March 31, 12.35 a.m. Washington, March 30. It is announced that Commodore Charlton, British Air Force Attache, leaves shortly for San Francisco to meet the Prince of Wales.—Aus.-N-Z.
