YOUNG MAN "ON THE ROCKS." A young man, named Henry Edward »right, was brought before Mr. T A «. Bailey, S.M., at New Plymouth' on Saturday morning, on a charge of having stolen a portmanteau from the s-s.. Rarawa on Friday. Accused pleaded guilty and elected to be dealt with summanly. _ Sub-Inspector Hntton, who appeared tor the police, said the owner of the portmanteau placed it on board the steamer, early on the evening of Friday On returning to his cabin a few minutes afterwards he found the portmanteau was not there. The cabin steward said he had seen a young man curving a portmanteau along the wharf a few minutes before the matter was mentioned to him and he set off in pursuit. H„ found the accused with the property in his possession, just about to leave for town by a tram, lie induced him to return to the boat, and the police were communicated with. Wright said he was "on the rocks." He had come to the Dominion on the Ruahine as assistant steward and was paid off at Aucklan'd about two months ago. when he came to New Plymouth. The discharges in his possession were all marked "very good." The Magistrate ordered accused to eonip up for sentence, if called upon, Within twelve months, advising him to seek work immediately. With accused's consent a prohibition order was issued against him.
