COMMERCE AND POLITICS.
" s MORE BUSINESS MEN NEEDED is n I regret to see so few commercial ~ men in the House," remarked the Honsd A. M. Myer.?, M.P., when addressing a ,g gathering of commercial travellers at j. Wellington, on the eve of his departure ■ y for the Old Country, "I am not doing , r any other section of the community any ;t Injustice when I say constructive ability (1 rests with the commercial man. It is ~ his business. He has to solve questions, ;r look ahead, and, in the light of experi,t once gained, lay down a policy and work y to it. I believe that the 'commercial 1. man embodies that particular ideal more than any other section of the community. . . Enough commercial men do not offer their services for polities. I believe we as a class are too selfish d in looking after the 'almighty dol- ,. lar if you will permit me to sav that le with all respect. Perhaps the majority )-■ of commercial people cannot spare the ir time for politics, hut there are some who 3 . could spare the time, and their ripe cx,e penenje would be of incalculable benefit j. to their fellow-citizens." ,f Mr. Myers added that be had alwavs m been impressed during his travels with « the high moral standing of the commert- cisl men of New Zealand. Enormous t- transactions were carried out daily simpih 'y by word' of mouth, and it was'almost ie an unheard of thing to find that nnv $ commercial man had broken his word :s (Applause). "You gentlemen are plavir ing a very important part in the comie wiimty," continued Mr. Myor- "Not 1 only does your influence ex-tend amon° 1- the commercial classes, but, ~ T vm n toe to say, to a much „^ >e than probably you imagine. r"-, ft Ins A had an effect on our politics. 1 iV^ g our politics are clean in New Zealand--16 tZT }« ai \ in aay other P art ° f «* g woild. .(Applause). I felt mv responsiit bility as Minister of Munitions, and I 0 am proud to say that New Zealand is i W y C T?J in the worM tha t never >f had a scandal." (Applause).
