At the re-trial at Wellington in K«bruary last of Hayne and Leyton for alleg. cd malpractice the principal Crown witness, Gladys Bachelor, refused to give evidence. She was charged in the City 1 oliee Court that 011 September 15 last she permited the use of an instrument. Chief Detective Bfthop said the Accused was charged under the Crimes Act on her depositions taken, before which she was warned that the evidence she Save might be used again* her. The Inspeotor of Police, however, told her that if she spolce the truth she would not be prosecuted on account of anything she said. She then mado a statement and Inter gave evidence at the trial when the jury disagreed on 18th November. / At the re trial she gave evidence rM .ctantly, and the result was again g. disagreement. T}i c venue was shifted to Wellington on February 22nd. She refused to gme any evidence. On account of the stand she took, the police took thefle proceedings. She was committed for trial.
