LAWN TENNIS.

AUCKLAND DEFEATS TARANATCI, BRILLIANT PLAY BY WALLACE. (By Telegraph—Special to Daily News). Auckland, Last Night. The inter-provincial tennis match, Auckland v. Taranaki, was plavod on the Kden and Epsom courts to-day and resulted in a win for Auckland by sisteen matches to three. The weather, though dull, was fine, and the courts were in excellent order. There were many close matches, and, although Auckland won by such a substantial margin, the visitors put up an excellent fight in many of the games. Practically all of the Taranaki team were out of practice, and this is attributable to the fact that the weather experienced in Taranaki during the summer was reverse to ideal for tennis. Wallace and Dickie played Laurenson and ftobson in the men's" doubles- The visitors gave a fine exhibition, and showed that tliey had by no means lost their former dash and ability to combine. Laurenson, in his match against Wallace, showed some splendid form. Wallace did not display his full capabilities and the match went to Laurenson, o—4 6—2. The visitors won two of the three men's doubles and demonstrated they had a much better idea of the doubles' game than the Aucklanders,

Mrs. Marshall had a very strenuous match with Miss Thomson, the first set being won by the former, 13—13, and the next by the same player, 6—2. In combined events Nicholson and Miss Brewster played Laurenson ami Miss Gorrie and the visitors at one stage of the game were within a point of victory; The first sot went to the Auckland _ players, C—3. The visitors led s—o in the second sot. The Aucklanders annexed the next four games, but Taranaki was not to bo denied, and won the set, o—4, Nicholson winning the final jjnme with a most brilliant volley. Laurenson and Miss Gorrie however, succeeded in winning the final' after a hard struggle, Wallace and Miss Knndle created n surprise by defeating Griffiths and Miss I Macfarlane, the holders of the ! New Zealand combined championship, n allaee played a magnificent game and outclassed Griffiths. It is suggested now that Wallace should partner Laurenson against Beamish and Lowe, the English team, at Auckland on Wednesday. Results (Auckland players mentioned first):— MEN'S SINGLES.
