Isaac Herbert Prout, of Toko, was ; ;ncd £2 and costs for drunkenness, isorderly behavior, and using obscene inguage, and a ■prohibition order was ssued against him for 12 months. Frederick Hargraves, a young man, ppcared on remand, charged with forgng the nam« of Sam Hop to a cheque for £9, drawn on the National Bank of lew Zealand, and with littering the heque to John Henry Burmester. He vas further charged with obtaining at Stratford a pair of gent's boots, pair if rubbers and pair of braces of a total ralne of £2 Ms 3d from John Henry 3urmcster by means of a valueless •heque. A further charge of stealing a ihirt, handkerchief and tie, the property >f Henry Jepson, was preferred against ;he accused. Sergeant Dale conducted the prosecu;ion for the police, and Mr. E. H. Young .vatched the proceedings on behalf of Joe Kee, the manager of Sam Hop's fruit mop. Sergeant Dale said that the accused had >een employed at'Sisarich'fi, Pivac's and Harris' restaurants, and at each of these places thefts had been committed. Accused was in the habit of going to Toe Kee's fruit shop, and soon became familiar with the Chinamen. On the ilay on which the theft was committed Toe Kca and Jack Yat Lung were in the slion. The accused had gone into the back kitchen, and while the two Chinamen were absent from the room he took Toe Kee's cheque book, which had been ilaced on the table. Subsequently, accused went to Rurmcstcr's shop and purchased some goods, for which heitenTcrerl a. cheque, for £9, purporting to be signed by Sam Hop. Mr. Burmester anve him the change and next day paid the cheque into the bank, but it was afterwards returned to him marked "no nccnunt." Joe Kce would say that Sam Hop could not possibly have signed his nanip to the cheque and that it was a forgery. v Dale said he would call evidence from F.ltliam to show that the n"pu«pd was nut on an expedition of forgery. He turned up at Eltham with a cheque for £2l. sismed with the name of Sam Hon. and endeavored to buy further articles of clothing with it. However the draper in Kit hum rang up the bank nnd was informed that Sam Plop had no account in the bank. Then Hie accused tried three or four hotels in an effort to n.ias the cheque, hut without success. What became of that clieque he (the sergeant! did not know. The accused wna arrested on the charge, and when asked about the matter =nM he bad eiven Mr. Burmester a chcqtto. hut it was not the one with Sam Hop's signature on it. Certain articles of clothing belonging to Mr. .Tewon were missing from the Stanley Boarding House. These were Kubsenuentlv found in the possession of the accused. On the completion of the evidence, the accused pleaded miilty to all the charges, and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. A conference of representatives of the Tnranaki. Stratford, and Hawera Acclimatisation ■ Societies was held to-dav at Stratford. Mr. W' P. Kirkwood (Stratford) presiding. After a discussion on a proposal to nma.lgamate the three societies it was decided that the various I delegates should submit the matter at the annual meetings of their societies. KING'S CINEMA. "The Man From Kangaroo," with "Snowy Baker" in the lead opposite Miss Brownie Vernon, and a specially-sclected east is the result of their four months work, which, naturally, to bear favorable comparison with "The Lure of the Bush" and "The Sentimental Bloke" must set a new standard. This, it is claimed by the Press and public of Australia, it has done, and the supreme confidence of Mr. E. .T. Carroll in his project is, therefore, justified.
