TIRE DESTROYS A CHURCH. By Telegraph—Press Association. Waipawa, March 24. Tiie Catholic Church was gutted by fire eafly this morning. The flames had obtained a good hold when discovered and travelled "rapidly. The lire started in the sanctuary, but the cause is unknown. The building is insured for .£550, and the furnishings for £175 in the Standard Insurance Office, the organ for £370 in the Norwich Union Office. The loss is estimated at about £2OOO, A WOMAN EMBEZZLER. Wellington, March 22, Kathleen Eleanore Morton, 2-2 years of age, who was arrested in Sydney on a charge of the theft of £343, the property of the Young Women's Christian Association, pleaded guilty and was remanded to the Supreme Court for sentence. The accused was employed — as office secretary, and had charge of "■» the books and banking for the association. .FREIGHT ON. FRUl'jf. Wellington, March 24. As the result of representations made by the Department of Agriculture to the Shipping Controller in London it has been arranged that the charge shall be stated at the rate per 40 cubic feet measurement on frujt shipped to the Kingdom instead of a flat rate per case. It is expected this will result in the saving of Is a case and possibly more, as at "least 20 to 22 cases § with a full allowance for dunnage should be equivalent to 40 cubic feet of space, whereas the original quotation Was evidently based on Is cases to the same measurement.
