REBELLION NOT FAVORED.
HIGH POLITICAL TENSION.

According to the Dublin correspondent of the Sunday Times, the Sinn Fein leaders are averse to any recurrence, of a, rebellion, knowing that failure would be inevitable, but young hotheads are developing a dangerous spirit. The political tension has reached a point unequalled for many months. —United Service. MORE CRIMES. MURDER OF A LORD MAYOR. London, March 20. Mac Curtain, Lord Mayor of Cork, n prominent Sinn Feiner, wh>. was interned for some time after the Easter week rebellion, has been murdered in atrocious circumstances. Eight to ten men, with blackened faces, came tc his house in Blackpool in the middle of the night, Mrs. Mac Curtain opened the door, and the men rushed in. While some held Mrs. Mac Curtain down others dashed up to the Lord Mayor's bedroom and shot at him. 'The men'then motored oft", and Mrs, Mac Curtain rang up the Fire Station, bul the Lord Mayor died before a priest arrived.
MaeCurtain leaves several young children. Professor Stockley, a prominent Cork ! Sinn Feiner, had a narrow escape yesterday. Four shots were fired at him, but ; he was not hurt. : Later the same night Constable Muri tagh was off duty a't the quay side, . when suddenly shots rang out, and Mur- , tagh dropped dead. The body of Mac Curtain is lying in state iu the Sinn Fein uniform, with a guard of volunteers. On Monday there will be a public funeral. The chairman of the Tipperary Guardians said the shooting was an appalling event, casting a gloom over the country. •The military searched the house after the shooting. The Weekly Despatch describes the ' murder as an example of a new counteroutrage, and points out it is hardly pos- ' sible to attribute the crime to Sinn Fein--1 ere.—United Service.
