London, March 17. j The Imperial Tobacco Company la increasing 1 its capital by £12,000,000 in £1 shares, of which 5,600,000 were immediately offered to shareholders at £2. London, March 17. In the absence of demand no tallow sales were held. The Stock Exchange is weak, owing to fears of an advance in the bank rate. Consols £4B, Waihi 41s 3d and 43s Id, Junctions lis, P. and 0. £550 and £570. Gold 110s, silver 65% d. The fall is due to the improved American exchange. The decline in tin and copper is due to heavy realisations. At the wool sales a fair selection of merinos and crossbreds was offered. Prices were harder owing to more Continental competition. Small quantities released at the new price of 05s Bd, Oats, firm, but quiet. Peas.—Market dull. New Zealand 120s tq 1255 ( maples 140s to 1455. Beans. —Market slow and unchanged. Sugar.—Wblte Mauritius, spot 117s. Tin. —The decline is due to heavy realisation. Wool.—At the sales there was a better selection of Merinos and crossbreds, and prices were harder for all sor,ts. A record price of 13% d was obtained for scoured, and for first combing ewe 1255, the average being 123 d; New Zealand Gear 58d. The Bradford market has a healthy tone. More business is doing. Sixty-fours 156 d to 159 d; fiftysixes, 93d; forty-sixes, 42d. Stock Exchange,—The market is very flat, especially for gilt-edged securities, although the Bank rate is unaltered. Short loans 4% per cent, three months bills 5% per cent. Foreign Exchange.—The rates on London &Te: PaTls 50.58 franca? Stockholm, 18.27 kroner; Christianla, 20 65 kroner; Calcutta, to tho rupee; Montreal, 4.18 dollars to the £1; New York, 3.72 dollars to the £l.
