NOTES ON THE BACING. (Special to Sally News ) Masterton, March 24. A dozen maidens were saddled up for the opening event, the Trial Stakes. Fortune Teller and Celraesto. were made favorites, and Kildeo was well backed. Sir Wai gaTo trouble at the stcrt, but eventually a good release was effected, and Silk Seta rushed to the front followed by Fortune Teller. At the turn, Fortune Teller was In charse, and a little' later Klldee moved forward. Fortune feller had the race well won at the distance, but a good finish for, second place was fowrht out by Klldee and Ceiruesla. Fortune Teller won by four lengths, and Celmesia beat Klldee on the post for second place. Cold Pan was fourth and Lady Pau list. Cashmere, Glentonr. and Paltaraka were withdrawn from the Telephone Hack Handicap, loavine a field of eight. The good looking Miss Gold was Installod a hot favorite. The start was excellent. but in less than a furlonp Miss Cold hit the front, and Orawia, who began smartly, dropped back a little. Lady Witchet dwelt on the mark, rnd was left several lengths behind. Miss Gold led all the way and won with comfort by two lengths from Mosthenc3. who was a length and a hilf ahead of Probate. The second favorite, Orawia, was fourth, and Stutter fifth. During the running Galore and Paroransi came down. T. Prltchard. the rider of Galore, escaped injury, but 3. Olsen, the rider of Parorangi, was rather badly taocSctf about.

A one dividend field contested the Flying Handicap. Tlie Walrarapa-owned Chimera was favorite, and As'.inome was heavily supported. Astlnome shot to the front at the rise of the barrier and was never challenged She was not ridden out in the straight, and won by a length from Chimera, who finished well and dead-heated for second positioii with Torfreda. Time, 1.141-5. The chief event of the day drew another small field, only flvo parading. Dainty Step, who had never bofore been'over the distance, carried a lot of money on the machine, and was sent out favorite', while Red Ribbon was much in demand. At (ho start Rose Wreath led for half a mile, when Multalne and Dainty Step moved to the front. At the turn Into the straight. Red Ribbon ran up to the leaders and, soon taking charge, won easily by five lengths frrai Dainty Step, who was two lengths in front of Multaine, with Rose Wreath fourth and Wishful last.

Still another small Held went to the post when the Juvenile Handicap came up for decision This event saw a hot favorite in the Trenihsm trained Canyon, beaten after she had looked sure to win when a furlong and a half from home. Canyon was first to the front, and she established a good lead, followed by Rleuse. Canyon was flrst Into the straight, and a lltt|e over a furlong from home appeared to be going easily, but there Raceful began a run which he sustained well and landed a winner by three-quarters of a length from J.ittle River, who cut Canyon out of second place by a neck. Rleuse was fourth.

Haljowvonia was made i pronounced favorite in the Masterton Hack Handicap, but the Trentham Ally, though she finished well, had no chance with the winner, who was well handled by A. ,T. McPlynn, and tooT: charge before tho straight was entered, winning very easily by half a dozen lengths from Stutter. Hallowvonla finished with a good run. and just failed to head off Stutter. Probate was fourth.

The Stewards' Handicap, which on paper looked a good thing for Affectation, brought about a surprise. Affectation won all right, but the dividend he returned. Instead of being remarkably small, was particularly good. No description of the race is needed, beyond saying that Affectation won from end tp end and passed the post three lengths ahead of Scornful, who beat Matatua by a length. Penury Rose, who finished last, was fa/orite.

The concluding event was won by Sweet Memory by a length from Import, with Timidity a good third.
