A London wholesale drapery firm states in a recent report just received by a Dunedin firm that the position in regard to woollen goods is steadily becoming more acute, and that it is only possible to place orders for limited quantifies for delivery , months ahead. The. demand from all quarters for the better quality of English woollens is enormous, and manufacturers are hooked up with orders well into 1821. It must also be remembered that a mill turning out 1000 pieces a week before the war cannot now exceed 700 pieces on account of shortage of labor. This, combined with the abnormal demand, has created a very difficult position, and has resulted in a more or less voluntary rationing system by the manufacturers to the regular customers. Merchants at present pay on an average Is 8d per ounce for good worsteds, and houses that touch the very best worsteds pay as high as 2s 7%d per ounce. Wool in London is practically unobtainable, and prices have advanc.ed Is 6d per lb, in raw material alone. The market in regard to cotton goods is somewhat similar. Silks have advanced 50 per cent, in price during tho last three months, and with the world crop of silk short, there ig little hope of an easier situation for many months. — Otago Times.
