A cable from London reports the death of Mrs. Isabel Baker, wife of Mr. John H. Baker, formerly Assistant-Sur-veyor-General in New ZealandMr. A. S. Webber lias resigned the headmastership of Newton West School, Auckland, which position he has held for the last 30 years. , The residents of Alton entertained Mr. G. W. A. Tayler, who is leaving the district, at a social, and presented him with a fountain pen, as a token of esteem. The late Mr. Augustus - Braithwaite who was murdered at Ponsonby on Saturday last, was known in Manaia, he having acted as relieving postmaster there some years ago. The railway staff at Patea, with a' number of local residents, farewelled Mr. Zoltz, the stationmaster, last Monday. On behalf of the staff and the public, the Mayor presented Mr. Voltz with several mementoes, including a handsome marbl eelock suitably inscribed. The Hon. A. M. Myers, accompanied by Mrs. Myers and family, left Wellington yesterday for the Old Country by the Megantic. Mr. Myers expects to return to New Zealand in six or seven months' time. The death is announced at Woodvillo of Mr. James Henry Morgan, an old resident of Hawke's Bay. The late Mr_ Morgan wa3 born at Cornwall, 72 years ago, and arrived in Napier in 1872, spending the greater portion of his life as a farmer. The leath occurred at Woodville last Sunday of Mr. J. 11. Morgan, an old resident of the district, aged 72Sergeant Beid, of Wanganui, arrived at Hawera on Thursday evening to relieve Sergeant Henry, who is suffering from influenza. Sergeant Henry is making satisfactory progress, and when sufficiently recovered will (states the Star) leave for a holiday. The death took place at Auckland on Thursday of Margaret (Lady) Makgill, of Waiuku, widow of the late Captain Sir John Makgill, late of Hendricks, Fifeshire, Scotland. The deceased lady was 7(1 yearn of age. She was a sistev of Lord Haldane of Cloan, late Lord Chancellor, formerly Secretary of State for War. and founder of the Territorial Army scheme. Lady Makgill was the mother of Dr. E. H. Makgill, Chief Health Officer for the Auckland district, and Acting-lnspector-General of Hospitals.
