MEAT MARKET.
SUPPLIES FOR AMERICA. TO RELIEVi; THE CONGESTION. By Telenraph.—Press Assn.—- Copyrleht. Eeceived March 18, 5.5 p.m. New York, March 17. Jt is understood the British Government has put on sale in New York a hrge quantity of Australian and New Zealand lamb and mutton and the prices are respectively 18J cents and I'2| cents per pound, the wholesale current prices being 30 cents and 2-1 cents. It is indicated that this is being done in crder to relieve the congestion of the meat stores in Britain, where some vessels carrying Australian meats are unable to unload for three weeks.—Aus,S.Z. Cable Assn.
THE GLUT AT HOME. PREFERENCE TO AMERICAN CARGOES. London, March 13. Some comment has been aroused recently in connection with the quicker discharge which is alleged to be secured in London for Soutli American meat. It is now pointed out that the South American liners have brought no chilled meat for some months past, in accordance with Government instructions. Liner? have been bringing frozen the same descriptions of beef which were previously carried chilled. It is clear, however, that South American meat reaches the market in the United Kingdom much more quickly than Australasian meat, which is also suffering from the length of lime it has been in store. It is asserted that until the vast stocks of old meat have been disposed of, the good character earned before the war by fresh Australian and New Zealand frozen meat cannot be fully redeemed. It is further contended that not much progress will be made with the disposal of the meat until it is offered at a price nearer fourpenee than the present wholesale price of sixpence a pound.—lmperial Service.
