The latest election returns show the. strength of the parties as follows: seats Unionists 25 South African Party 40 Nationalists ; , 43 Labor 21 Independents . 3 The state of the parties in the South African House of Assembly before the dissolution, was:— seats South African Party 55 Unionists -r- 40 Nationalists 27 Labor, etc. 8 This House was elected in 1915, when the Unionists pledged their support during the war to General Botha, Leader of the South African Party and Prime Minister. On the death of General Botha, General Smuts succeeded to the leadership of the South African Party, and is at present Prime Minister,
